20-year-old college student Emily explains that for her, makeup isn't about man-pleasing, but about self-empowerment! Her perspective gives us a different look on why we use makeup!

~

How often do you use makeup?

Surprisingly not that often anymore. I wear it when I go out on the weekends but in high school I used to wear makeup everyday. I feel more carefree and just better about myself without it on, but it was really important to me when I used to be a little less confident in high school. I'm not sure I would be as comfortable in my own skin now if I wasn't able to wear makeup in high school.

When did you start using makeup and why?

I started using makeup (just wearing mascara) my freshman year of high school I think. My mom bought me some because my friends had started as well.

Why do you use makeup now?

I use make up now to cover up blemishes sometimes or make my eyes pop when I go out, but I'm not as consistent with is as I used to be. Recently I've liked playing around with different colored lipsticks/lipglosses for fun.

Do you think you wear more makeup when you go out in part to get attention from guys?

I see how a lot of people think that, and it's true that I want to look good in front of everyone when I go out, but I really don't think so. I've had guy friends tell me they actually don't like when girls wear bright hot-pink lipstick or too much lipgloss because it's sticky... but I don't care. It makes me feel happy and excited for the night, not like guys will want me more because of it.

Do you think makeup is vain? Why or why not?

I don't think makeup is vain. I think it can covers up insecurities, and sometimes people just like the way they look with make up on and that's all fine.

Can you think of a time you wished you didn’t have to wear makeup?

Sometimes I wish I didn't wear make up when I come home from a night out and feel lazy about taking it off, haha. But that's not every night so it's not a big deal.

Emily puts how she feels and her own self-confidence before the opinion of her friends, specifically men. She emphasizes that makeup, along with hiding any small imperfections, is for fun! Her happiness is what's most important - inspiring!
