Headpieces, Birdcages and Short Veils: Oh, the Choices!

Well, Ladies, you’ve found your dream dress and you breathe a sigh of relief. However, now you ask, what should I wear on my head? Many women go the traditional route and wear veils of varying lengths. Others may opt for wreaths of flowers and some women prefer headpieces or a combination of veils with headpieces. Any bride could get confused with all that’s out there. Focusing on headpieces, we’ve collected a handful of our favorites to show you. If you love bling and are looking for a wow factor piece that is sure to attract attention, check out this gem-embellished headband made of rhinestones and alabaster-colored stones.

One of my favorite looks is combining an organza and feather comb with retro “birdcage” netting. And if you look closely, this netting is sprinkled with subtle rhinestones that add just a hint of sparkle.

Perhaps you like the idea of a veil but don’t want the length or the volume. Below is another birdcage-style headpiece made of tulle with pearl and crystal-studded appliques. This super-short veil conveys a soft, feminine and romantic look.

Lastly, how about a delicate headband worn like a crown? This one is made of rhinestones, pearls and crystals. These are popular with outdoor weddings or when the bride has a vintage theme in mind. Veils can also be added to the back of the head, a look reminiscent of the ‘20s and ‘30s. Or just add a few small rose buds and baby’s breathe for a “woodsy” feel.

Women have been adorning their heads for thousands of years, as we see in the headdress worn by Queen Nefertiti below. (Now, that was a fashion statement!) And how could any of us forget Sarah Jessica Parker donning the Vivienne Westwood peacock headpiece in the 2008 movie Sex in the City? Go back to the ‘80s and you’ll find some veils and headpieces worthy of a Mardi Gras parade. (Even thought I lived through this, I still find it hard to believe that women wore these ridiculous dresses.) Oh, and the inimitable Audrey Hepburn, who embodied such unmatched style and elegance that so many of us crave - what she wore on her head made everyone turn with envy.
