Beautiful. Brainy. Artsy. Entrepreneur. These are words that describe our bride, Kate. She’s a mover and a shaker, not your average woman with a degree. She’s someone who will make the world a better place.

So, what type of gown does a woman like this choose for her wedding day? It can’t be just a pretty gown or a glamorous one. It has to reflect her inner style and creativity. Kate found her gown at our salon after trying on many, many dresses. It’s a romantic organza dress by Augusta Jones called Elaine.

She told me:

Oh my, I tried on literally over 100 dresses (and this is not an exaggeration). I had a hard time finding that 'this is it!' feeling because all the dresses were so beautiful. I went back 3 or 4 times to Mimi’s with various family members to get their opinion on a couple dresses that made the final cut. It came down to finding a dress that was timeless and classic so I wouldn't look back at photos and regret a fashion trend!

My bridal consultant was accommodating and listened to exactly what I was looking for. She helped me with my decision making process and gave honest feedback about the dresses. My appointments didn't feel rushed, unlike at other bridal boutiques where they ushered me out the door after an hour.

Kate and Phillip got married on a sunny 4th of July weekend at Cherry Basket Farm in Northport on the Leelanau Peninsula. Kate told us:

The weather was perfect for an outdoor wedding. There was a nice breeze that day so the soft organza overlay on my dress blew gently in the wind and the train skirted over the ground so nicely.

Kate grew up in a little town near Cleveland, OH. She attended Miami University and got her Masters in Design Management at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA. While working on her thesis, she traveled to Detroit to conduct field research. She moved to Detroit to become the Executive Director at Ponyride, a creative incubation space for socially conscious entrepreneurs. She is also the local partner at Our/Detroit, a vodka brand that launched in August 2014. She also works on community outreach and education for the betterment of Detroit.

Phillip grew up in rural Marysville, MI. After graduation from Columbia College in Chicago, he traveled the globe as a fashion model. He moved back to Michigan to study architecture at the University of Michigan. Phillip has always had a place in his heart for Detroit so he bought a building on Michigan Avenue, taught himself how to do carpentry, and four years later opened Slow Bar BQ. He has his hands full with Slow’s expansion and his new seasonal restaurant Gold Cash Gold.

Kate, we love your photos! Thanks for letting Mimi’s be a part of your gown search. Best wishes to you and Phillip, in not only your marriage, but in all of your endeavors to make Detroit a better place.
