The Softer Side of Ball Gowns

In 1947, at his very first Spring/Summer fashion collection, Christian Dior launched a silhouette that would make fashion history. The editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar magazine called it the “New Look”. The silhouette featured a small, nipped-in waist and a voluminous full skirt. It became very popular in Hollywood, with European aristocracy, and with countless other designers. Here, the modern idea of the ball gown was born.

For many brides, a ball gown is the only choice. It’s a statement piece that is big and bold, lavish and extravagant. Princess images come to mind – think Princess Diana, and of course, the most famous of all, Cinderella, whose ball gown was certainly influenced by Dior’s New Look when Disney released the animated classic in 1950.

Yet, what if the ball-gown-loving bride wants less poof, less drama and is searching for a softer look? Here are a few gowns that offer the ball gown silhouette without all of the bells and whistles. Elegant and feminine – yes; Cinderella – no way.

This first gown named Bardot by couture designer Amsale is made of an ivory silk taffeta and features a hand-beaded bodice, and every girl’s favorite, POCKETS!

Here’s a soft and dreamy gown by Watters called Kaliah. It features a skirt made of English netting with a hand-beaded bodice of Swarovski Crystals and an illusion neckline. It’s shown in the color Porcelain Pink and is also available in Light Nude.

And lastly, here’s a gown from Blush by Hayley Paige called Maisie. It’s a lace and tulle gown with a sculpted natural waist bodice and sweetheart neckline available in the color ivory/oyster. It comes with a horsehair belt, which matches the trim on the gown. And in true Hayley Paige style, she’s created the perfect veil to match the dress.

Mimi’s would like to thank our beautiful models, Susanna and Kara. Without them, we'd just be dressing up mannequins! We appreciate your time in making this a successful shoot.
